Job Connection
The Job Connection is a chore service program run by the Macalester-Groveland Community Council and made possible by a generous grant from the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging.
Since 1989, the Job Connection has offered senior citizens and people with disabilities assistance with household chores so that they may continue to live independently. Currently, The Job Connection serves over 200 residents in the Macalester-Groveland, Highland, and Summit Hill neighborhoods of St. Paul by providing housecleaning, yard maintenance, snow removal and minor household repair services.
Youth and adults ages 12 and older may register as independent contractors through The Job Connection. These workers are screened and participate in an orientation meeting. As participants (seniors and people with disabilities) call to request workers, they are given the names and phone numbers of independent contractors whose interests match their needs. Scheduling and pay arrangements are negotiable and are made between the participant and the contractor. The typical pay rate for youth workers is $8 to 12/hour depending on age, experience, and the type of chore.
Many Job Connection participants have limited financial resources and are physically unable to perform household chores without assistance. A subsidy fund is available for those who qualify for financial assistance.
Both contractors and volunteers gain valuable work experience. Seniors and individuals with disabilities receive affordable, dependable assistance. Everyone involved benefits from the positive relationships that are formed between neighbors across generations.
